What is Chromium?

Chromium (also called chromium) is one of the essential trace elements that must be taken in with food as they are the Body cannot form itself. At the same time, it is a essential mineral, similar to magnesium. In general, trace elements are inorganic nutrients that humans need in small quantities. The lungs, liver, spleen and bones are the main storage locations for chromium. In the blood it is bound to transport proteins such as albumin. The vital substance is particularly important for carbohydrate metabolism and the regulation of blood sugar levels. It also plays an important role in the function of the thyroid gland and protein synthesis. The adult requirement is less than 1 mg per day. Chromium occurs naturally in various compounds. In micronutrient medicine and supplementation, the form chromium(III)  is meant. It is the most bioavailable to humans and we also find it in food. Other forms such as chromium(VI) are toxic to humans and are used in industry.

Where does the vital substance occur?

We find chromium in both plant and animal foods. Whole wheat products, corn and Edam cheese contain larger quantities. But beans, nuts (especially Brazil nuts), fruit (e.g. blueberries) and meat also contain a considerable amount of this trace element. It should be noted that the proportion in dairy products is subject to considerable fluctuations, as the feeding of the animals further influences this. This also applies to eggs. Chromium from food is only stored in small amounts. A deficiency usually only occurs rarely, but this can occur more quickly due to stress, pregnancy or intensive training. In most cases, a lower level leads to insulin resistance, which resembles symptoms of diabetes mellitus. These include, among other things, poor concentration, nervousness, confusion and muscle weakness.

What functions does the molecule have in the human body?

The essential trace element, which has only been recognized since 1959 Chrome decreases in concentration with age. The vital substance has many important metabolic functions in the human body. Medical studies prove above all a positive influence on glucose metabolism. The molecule acts on the blood sugar hormone insulin, so that the sugar can pass from the blood into the body's cells. This causes blood sugar to drop. Chromium therefore serves to maintain glucose tolerance and counteract insulin resistance. The latter causes cells to have little or no ability to absorb glucose from the blood and even more insulin to be released. Our pancreas produces insulin. More precisely, chromium improves the usability of the glucose (smallest carbohydrate unit) present in the blood by increasing the sensitivity of the cell receptors to the hormone insulin. This means that the glucose is better absorbed by the cells. Therefore, the intake of sugar results in an increased release of chromium from the liver depots. A deficiency means that insulin can only develop its effect on the insulin receptors inadequately. This mechanism is important for both diabetics and non-diabetics. Chromium is part of the glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which improves insulin utilization.

Chromium, for example, is contained in BERBERSOME  - an innovative molecular complex for improving insulin resistance and glucose tolerance.

Berbersome combines the (sugar) metabolic benefits of berberine, chromium and zinc.

The molecule also influences blood lipid levels and can lower total cholesterol levels. This inhibits the formation of new fat compounds. It increases the absorption of amino acids into the muscles and leads to improved protein synthesis. We find a significant amount of chromium in the cell nucleus, suggesting that it is also involved in cell division.

Benefits of nutritional supplements with chromium

Because chromium primarily affects carbohydrate and fat metabolism, it is particularly popular in training and bodybuilding. Medical studies have shown that supplementation with chromium results in a lower risk of type 2 diabetes in test subjects.

  • Regulates blood sugar levels
  • Boosts the (fat) metabolism
  • By better utilization of blood glucose, it reduces food cravings
  • Prevents cardiovascular diseases
  • Can lead to improved athletic performance and muscle growth

Chromium supplementation is generally very well tolerated. If too much chromium has been consumed, this can lead to stomach pain and low blood sugar levels.
