Mark Hyman Longevity Routine & Supplements

Dr. Mark Hyman is an American physician and 15-time New York Times bestselling author. As a globally recognized expert in the field of "functional medicine", the 63-year-old trained family physician has already been able to help a large number of people. Among them was even a former American president, Bill Clinton.
In his new book "Young Forever", Dr. Mark Hyman summarizes all of his collected findings on the subject of longevity. But what does the co-founder of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine recommend? And what daily routine helps Dr. Hyman to be biologically 20 years younger?
All beginnings are difficult - Dr. Hyman's path to functional medicine
After studying medicine and nutritional science , Dr. Hyman's life took a turn for the worse in his early 30s. While he had previously been a passionate cyclist who could easily cycle more than 150 km a day, he became increasingly unfit until he could barely walk up the stairs. His bowels went crazy and he was plagued by diarrhea for years. He also suffered from severe memory problems, which made working as a doctor almost impossible.
Desperate, Dr. Hyman visited one doctor after another, but no one could find the root of his symptoms. Today, Dr. Hyman's condition would most likely be described as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). But what was the cause back then?
After a long search, Dr. Hyman carried out a mercury test - and then the problem was found. Over several years, a large amount of the toxic heavy metal had accumulated in his body, partly through the ventilation systems in his apartment in Beijing and partly through his food.
This experience ultimately led Mark Hyman to "functional medicine". From then on, he wanted to try to look at all possible sides of medicine. His aim is always to find the underlying cause, the "root cause". In his search for this, he used classical "Western medicine" and traditional Chinese or nutritional medicine. The American also uses alternative healing methods if he believes they offer added value.

What is functional medicine?
Before we look at Mark Hyman's routine, let's briefly clarify the term "functional medicine". This is a recognized medical approach that focuses on the cause of a disease rather than relying on the relief of symptoms through medication. Functional medicine views each patient as an individual and the body as an interconnected system.
Functional medicine, like "conventional medicine", is based on the latest scientific research and uses advanced laboratory tests and diagnostic methods.
This new type of medicine can be particularly helpful for chronic diseaseswhere traditional approaches may have limited effectiveness. These include, for example, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders.
Dr. Mark Hyman's Longevity Routine
In his books, in the podcast (Doctor's Farmacy) and on social media channels, the 63-year-old willingly talks aboutwhat he does every day to stay young and healthy. His routines and supplements have changed a little over the years (adapted to the latest scientific findings), buthis basic principles have remained the same:
The Doctors's Farmacy - the name of Dr. Mark Hyman's podcast
- Healthy eating: Dr. Mark Hyman follows his self-created Pegan diet. More on this later!
- Sport and exercise: Here, the American tries to incorporate more strength training for old age
- Sufficient sleep: As often as possible, Dr. Hyman tries to get eight hours of restful sleep.
- Stress reduction: Whether it's yoga, going for a walk or meeting friends - the American is a great advocate of a balanced life.
- Supplements: Dr. Hyman takes a variety of nutritional supplements every day. More on this in a moment!
- Community and vocation: In addition to his work as a doctor, Dr. Mark Hyman is also committed to a revolution in the agricultural industry. These various voluntary commitments give him support and strength.
Sport, a healthy diet and sufficient sleep are therefore the basis. But what does the American doctor recommend in detail and what does he do himself? We have summarized the most important findings from his latest book "Young forever", his podcasts and social media channels for you.
Supplements - a central component of Mark Hyman's biological rejuvenation
Dr. Mark Hyman takes a range of different supplements. Since a large part of the population suffers from both vitamin D deficiency (R) and a lack of healthy omega 3 fatty acids , (R)Dr. Hyman supplements both daily. He also takes a multivitamin preparation, which primarily contains the B vitamins. These should help him to reduce his congenitally high homocysteine levels.
Did you know Homocysteine is an amino acid that we partly absorb with food and partly produce ourselves. Large amounts of this amino acid have been linked in studies to cardiovascular disease, for example. In order to convert homocysteine into the harmless methionine, our body needs methyl groups as well as B vitamins. This can provide betaine, also known as trimethylglycerol.
Here you can find out more about betaine!
A healthy, plant-rich diet is one of the building blocks of optimal health. To further support this, Dr. Hyman takes quercetin . This member of the phytochemicals is also known as the "king of flavonoids" and has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, fisetin capsules, EGCG (bioactive substance from green tea) and sulforaphane are part of his daily routine.
Click on the respective molecules to find out more about quercetin & sulforaphane.
Quercetin is not only a potent antioxidant, but also a natural CD38 inhibitor. This is interesting because it leads to less degradation of NAD+ . NAD+ metabolism is one of the central areas of research in geriatric medicine and for Hyman, maintaining NAD levels is a central key to long-term health.
To keep his NAD+ levels high, he regularly exercises, does interval fasting and supplements with NAD precursors. However, current research shows that supplementation alone is not necessarily sufficient for maintaining NAD levels in old age. A mix of precursors, NAD degradation inhibitors and substances that support NAD production could be an alternative. At MoleQlar, we have formulated regeNAD (NAD Regenerating Complex) for this reason!
You can read more about the innovative regeNAD complex here!
If you want to find out more about the exciting NAD+ metabolism, read our detailed article in the magazine. And if you are also interested in knowing your NAD+ level, then we have just the thing for you with the first NAD+ dry blood test in Europe, co-developed by MOLEQLAR.
Mark Hyman's diet - plant-based and high in protein
Dr. Hyman is a follower of his self-designed Pegan Diet. This word is made up of "vegan" and "paleo". So you eat mainly fresh, unprocessed food, with a focus on plants. One of the main points of the diet is the blood sugar level. With the help of complex carbohydrates and little direct sugar, high blood sugar fluctuations should be avoided.
Similarly to Dr. Peter Attia , Dr. Mark Hyman sees insulin resistance as one of the main causes of many "western diseases", such as type 2 diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular diseases. He also postulates that insulin resistance is one of the main hallmarks of ageing .
"What the heck should I eat?" - the most common question in Dr. Hyman's practice
With the help of his diet, regular exercise and nutritional supplements, Dr. Hyman has been able to turn back his biological age by almost 20 years! And when you see the 63-year-old like this, you believe him. Although he is about to retire by German standards, the American radiates an energy that 20-year-olds envy.
Hot yoga, walks, meditation - Mark Hyman's stress reduction
At first glance, Dr. Hyman's life seems extremely busy. Running a clinic, recording podcasts, making YouTube videos, writing bestsellers and exercising several times a week. Finding enough time for friends and family is no easy task, especially as Dr. Hyman's day only has 24 hours, eight of which he spends sleeping.
In order not to lose his balance, the American has a whole range of tips for reducing stress. Perhaps one of them can help you:
- Meditation/breathing exercise: Dr. Hyman tries to consciously concentrate on his breathing for a few minutes every day. Long, deep exhalations can activate our parasympathetic nervous system and calm it down.
- Yoga: Yoga is an extension of breathing techniques with movement. Dr. Hyman loves to practice hot yoga. As the name suggests, the exercises here are carried out at particularly high temperatures. Up to 41 degrees, similar to a steam sauna. You're guaranteed to work up a sweat.
- Walks: Dr. Hyman repeatedly emphasizes the importance of connecting with nature. For him, a walk is the perfect opportunity to be in a soothing environment.
- Socializing: We humans are social beings. Each of us has a different need for social contact. According to Dr. Hyman, one should not underestimate how pleasant a meeting with friends can be.
Hormesis: Stress is not always bad
Finding the right balance is probably the key trick when it comes to stress. Stress has a very negative connotation in our society - but it doesn't always have to be. Dr. Hyman believes that small amounts of stress are actually beneficial for you. He talks about hormesis, which comes from the Greek and means something like impetus. Our body reacts to a stressful stimulus with a response and that response can be beneficial to us.
One example would be the regular ice baths that Dr. Hyman takes. Another would be fasting. Due to the lack of nutrients, our body switches into "survival mode". Old cells are increasingly broken down and recycled (autophagy) and a whole range of messenger substances ensure that organisms that fastlive longer on average.
